The Magic Behind Solar Savings: Net Metering Explained
If you’ve started looking into solar power for your home, you’ve probably heard the term “Net Metering.” But what exactly is it, and why is it the single most important factor in whether or not your solar investment pays off?
How Net Metering Works
When the sun is shining during the day, your solar panels will often produce more electricity than your home is currently consuming. With Net Metering, that excess power isn’t wasted. Instead, it is sent backward through your utility meter and out onto the local power grid to be used by your neighbors.
In exchange, your utility company (like BGE, PEPCO, or Delmarva Power) credits your account for that power. At night, or on cloudy days when your panels aren’t producing enough power, your home pulls electricity from the grid and uses those stored-up credits to pay for it. In a true 1:1 Net Metering setup, the utility credits you at the exact same retail rate they charge you.
The Problem: Net Metering is Disappearing
Here is the hard truth: utility companies don’t like Net Metering. Buying power from you at full retail price cuts into their profit margins. Over the past few years, a massive wave of regulatory changes has swept the nation.
In states like California (with the rollout of NEM 3.0), utility companies successfully lobbied to slash the value of solar credits by up to 75%. Other states are rapidly following suit, transitioning from retail-rate Net Metering to much less favorable “wholesale” rates.
Why Time is of the Essence
Currently, residents in the Mid-Atlantic and Maryland areas still have access to highly favorable Net Metering policies. However, before you can start banking credits, your solar system must be approved for Interconnection and Net Metering by your utility company.
These approvals are absolutely not guaranteed. The longer you wait, the higher the risk that your local utility company will reach their maximum solar capacity caps or that state legislation will roll back the financial benefits of going solar.
If you want to lock in your Net Metering benefits while they are still available, the time to act is now. Check out our guide on How to Prepare for Your Solar Consultation to take the first step!
